Arizona Has Lowest Graduation Rate for ELLs in the Nation

Shame on us!  We can do better.  "Preliminary data released by the US Department of Education this week shows that only 25 percent of English Language Learners in Arizona graduate high school in four years.  That's compared to Texas, where the English Language Learner graduation rate is 58 percent, and California, at 60 percent." (Jude Joffe-Block, KNAU, Arizona Public Radio, 11/29/2012, knau.org).  None of these rates are something to be proud of...

It is understatement to say it is far past due to use existing research on how to teach language learners in the classroom.  We know a great deal about how to effectively teach language learners yet we fail to get that information to teachers so they can use it in the classroom.  Let this be a wake up call to all of us in education.  We need to work smarter and harder on providing ELLs what they need in schools.
