"English in the Language Cloud"

When considered within all of the languages spoken today, English is a large and strong language (Each language is represented by a dot - the smaller, the fewer speakers, the larger, the greater number of speakers.  See the large purple dot in the top left-hand corner?  That's the population of English speakers!)  Ethnologue.com color-codes it purple (the highest rank) because it "has been developed to the point that it is used and sustained by institutions beyond the home and community."

*The EGIDS provides a general way to identify where a language lies on the continuum between endangerment and development.
