Word Categories

Tip Details

Word Categories: Choose a few categories of lists of word types that you have been teaching (for example, travel, weather, and jobs). Photocopy them and cut the individual words from the lists out. Give each pair of students 2 yarn circles of approximately 8 inches in diameter and ask them to group the words by similarities or by specific category. As you circulate and assess oral language and understanding, ask pairs to explain their reasoning for grouping the items as they did.
