What Do You Know?: Pre-reading, to draw upon prior knowledge, determine the main concepts or ideas that will be discovered when reading the text (e.g. lies/deception in Little Red Riding Hood; cycles in photosynthesis; freedom with responsibility in the US Constitution etc). Choose a graphic organizer and invite the students to brainstorm what they know as a whole class about the concept(s) recording their information on the graphic organizer chart. Students can also copy down the chart on individual charts before reading.
