Tip: Toss It Review!
How do I do it?
Toss a foam or light ball and students who catch it generate words around a topic that you record on the board, e.g. things in a house, operations in math, past tense verbs, US Constitution, etc.
Variations & Extensions:
Create a few topics on the board such as: Science Words, Math Words, Poetry etc. and when students catch the ball they choose the category and then say a word that fits into that category. Students in pairs have 5 seconds to decide on a word to share. Use picture cards for students with beginning English proficiency and they hold up the card. For younger students, sit in a circle next to a whiteboard stand and the students can roll the ball across the circle and the teacher records the word in the whiteboard with a sketch and/or the written word. Direct the students to write a summary or story utilizing the brainstormed words or model writing one whole class.
