Math Endurance Scale

Tip: Math Endurance Scale

How do I do it?
The Common Core for Math expects students to develop stamina for understanding and solving math problems.  To help students increase their stamina and persistence, it is helpful for students and teachers to know their frustration level when working in math.  Explain and then post the following symbols and suggested strategies:

☺ I’m happy.  I can keep working even when it’s hard.
  - Be sure to check your answers.
  - Make sure you can explain your thinking.
  - Try a new way to represent or solve a problem.
  - Explain to a classmate how you solved a problem.

☹ I’m struggling.  I am working slowly.
  - Back up.  Read the problem again and make sure you understand it.
  - Try drawing what you know.
  - Explain your thinking to a friend.
  - Ask a friend or the teacher to help you.

✗ I give up!  I can’t do this.
   - Take a deep breath.
   - Make a list of the words and information you do understand.
   - Underline the parts that don’t make sense.
   - Write down your questions about the problem.
   - Ask a friend or the teacher to help you.
