Math Pre-Problem Solving Questions

Tip: Pre-Problem Solving Questions

How do I do it?
After presenting and reading a math problem,  model asking and answering some questions with student assistance.  Give ELLs a chance to process information by doing a pair share for each question and then have volunteers share their ideas.  Record the ideas: What information will we need to solve the problem?  What other problems have we solved that are like/similar to this one?  What is everything we know about this problem?  What do the parts of the problem have in common?  What is unique about the problem?

Common Core Mathematical Practice Standard 1
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
