Understanding the Math Problem Checklist

Tip: Understanding the Math Problem Checklist

How do I do it?
Make a bookmark for students to use with strategies for understanding math problems.  Include icons or clip art for each strategy to support ELLs.  Suggestions for strategies to include on the bookmark (which can be laminated so students can check off strategies they've used with a dry erase marker):

  • Say it in your own words
  • Use materials or sketches to show the problem
  • Make a list of what you know
  • Make a list of the conditions and restrictions
  • Write the goal in your own words
  • Decide if you need an exact or estimated answer
  • Compare this problem to one like it
  • Work with a partner or a small group, taking turns and getting everyone's ideas
