Switch Word

Tip: Switch Word

How do I do it?
Choose one descriptive sentence from a text that your small group or whole class of students is reading.  Discuss what the sentence means, soliciting student ideas and recording them on a chart.  Next, cover up one of the descriptive words with sticky notes and ask students to choose a new word to replace it.  Discuss how the meaning has changed.  Chart responses.  Repeat with a new word.  Use word walls and word webs for reference.

Common Core ELA Reading Standard 4
Interpret words and phrases as they are used in a text, including determining technical, connotative, and figurative meanings, and analyze how specific word choices shape meaning or tone.
