Tip: Vocabulary Planning Chart

How do I do it? 
While progressing through a unit of study, on chart paper, list the topic of study, key ideas (what students should understand about the topic), and skills (what the students should be able to do), and associated vocabulary, phrases, and structures (e.g. topic sentence; giving reasons for opinions etc.).  As students learn more, add the key ideas and skills and associated language as a reference tool for students as they read and write.

Variations & Extensions
Include pictures and diagrams to make the language more comprehensible to English learners.  Direct students to keep a copy of the living chart in their notebooks, copying the information as the charts grows whole class.  Add a column for students who may need to add Tier 1 vocabulary to their reference lists.  The chart can be utilized during study, reading, writing, and discussion, as well as a study guide for formal assessments.

Reference
Tier 1 vocabulary is typically considered sight words and vocabulary that native English speakers take for granted like she, he, run, duck, flower etc.  Tier 2 vocabulary is more complex, related to content, abstract and requires some explanation like plot, setting, fabulous etc.  Tier 3 vocabulary is   not often utilized vocabulary like ignoramus, debilitated, supine etc.  Instruction should be focused on Tier 1 and 2 vocabulary.
